How Starlink Is Transforming Zimbabwe's Internet

As of September 7, 2024, Zimbabwe has entered a new era of digital connectivity with the nationwide launch of high-speed satellite internet delivered via a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation. This innovative service is set to transform internet access, particularly in regions that have long struggled with limited or unreliable connectivity.

Two residential packages are available to Zimbabwean consumers:

  • Standard: US$50 per month, hardware cost US$350, with speeds up to 200 Mbps. This option is ideal for households with multiple users or those requiring high bandwidth.
  • Mini: US$30 per month, hardware cost US$200, offering speeds up to 100 Mbps. This plan suits smaller households or users with basic internet needs.
Both packages provide unlimited data, and a one-time shipping fee of US$23 applies. Direct purchase from the provider is significantly more affordable than reseller rates, making the service accessible to a broader segment of the population.

Getting connected is straightforward. Customers visit the official website, enter their service address, select the desired hardware, and complete payment. Payment options include credit/debit cards and EcoCash. For EcoCash users, a Virtual Card Number (VCN) can be generated via mobile, enabling seamless online transactions. It is important to ensure sufficient USD balance in the EcoCash wallet before making a purchase.

Once ordered, equipment typically arrives within one to two weeks. Activation involves downloading the provider’s app, following the setup instructions for the satellite dish, and connecting devices to the new WiFi network.
The satellite network covers all regions of Zimbabwe. Service quality is influenced by clear line of sight, minimal obstructions, and favorable weather conditions. Users can expect speeds between 50–200 Mbps and latency of 20–40 ms, a significant improvement over many existing solutions, especially in rural areas

Compared to TelOne Blaze LTE, Econet SmartBiz 5G, and traditional fibre, the new satellite service offers broader coverage, unlimited data, and faster setup. This makes it an attractive solution for rural residents, users needing consistent high-speed connections, and anyone frustrated by data caps or slow speeds.
